Privacy policy

This page explains what this website collects, why it collects it, and how to get rid of it. It is written to be read rather than skipped.

Who runs this site

What is collected

There are only two things.

Your email address, if you give it. When you sign up to the newsletter we store the address you type in, the date you confirmed it, and which page you signed up from. We also record the IP address the signup came from, which exists only to stop automated abuse of the form.

Anonymous page counts. We count how many times each page is opened and roughly how many separate people opened it. To do the second part without identifying anyone, your IP address and browser are turned into a short code using a key that changes every day, and only that code is stored. The code cannot be turned back into your IP address, and the same visitor produces a different code tomorrow, so these counts cannot be joined together into a history of any one person. No cookie is used for this.

What is not collected

No advertising trackers. No third party analytics. No cookies for tracking of any kind. No profile of who you are or what you read. Your email address is never sold, rented, traded, or handed to any other company for their own use.

Why we are allowed to hold it

For the newsletter, the legal basis is your consent, which you give by typing your address in and then clicking the link in the confirmation email. You can take that consent back at any time and we act on it immediately. For the page counts, the legal basis is legitimate interest in knowing whether the site is being read, which is why they are kept anonymous.

Who else is involved

Running a website means other companies touch parts of it. These are the only ones.

• Vercel hosts the site and the pages you are reading.
• MongoDB Atlas stores the newsletter list and the posts.
• Cloudflare R2 stores images used in posts.
• Google sends the newsletter email, and serves the font used for headings.
• YouTube serves the video players. A player only loads once you tap it, so opening a page with videos on it sends nothing to YouTube until you choose to watch something. Once you do, YouTube's own privacy policy applies to that player.

How long it is kept

Your email address is kept until you unsubscribe or ask for it to be deleted. A signup that is never confirmed is deleted automatically after seven days. Page counts are kept for one year and the visitor codes inside them are thrown away after one month.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or send you a copy. If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR give you those rights explicitly, along with the right to object to processing and the right to complain to your national data protection authority. If you are in California, the CCPA gives you the right to know, to delete, and to opt out of sale. We do not sell personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of.

To use any of these, email misterquigley33@beirutsites.com. We will respond within 30 days. The fastest way to be removed from the newsletter is the unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email, which works in one click and needs no reply from anyone.

Children

This site is not intended for children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect anything from them. If you believe a child has signed up, email us and it will be deleted.

Data leaving your country

The companies above store data on servers in the United States and elsewhere. If you are in the UK or the EEA, that means your email address is transferred outside your country. Those transfers rely on the standard contractual clauses that each of those providers has in place.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. If a change materially affects what we do with your email address, subscribers are told by email before it takes effect.
